Stranded assets are assets that become worthless or unexpectedly lose value. Devaluation can be caused by a variety of factors, including regulatory, economic or market changes, technological substitution, price and demand, supply-side factors or cost structures. To limit global warming, much of the existing fossil fuel reserves will be “stranded,” i.e., left in the ground and depreciated.
